Municipalities can utilize GIS data in many ways throughout various agencies and departments of local government. Apart
from map production and visual geography representation of information, an enterprise GIS can be used to manage any and
all data and information operations. A parcel based GIS provides municipal clients an extremely precise geography base
that can be utilized in many departments throughout a municipality as well as in other aspects of local and regional
government. The following is a brief list of some of the capacities in which municipalities may choose to utilize GIS
data in their operations and delivery of services:
- Real Property Assessment and Taxation
- Utilities and Water Management
- Open Space and Land Management
- Planning and Development Control
- Transportation Management and Planning
- Emergency Management and Crisis Mitigation

Mapping Applications
Mapping applications enable the utilization of GIS data by providing the user
interface and program tools that allow non-technical staff and others to access
mapping data and implement the GIS for routine business operations.
Some applications may include: abutting and adjacent property identification for public
notifications, comparable market sales identification and reporting, calculating
frontage and lot dimensions for zoning enforcement, etc.
Internet Mapping
Delivering GIS data through the web is one of the latest developments in location based
information applications. Municipal clients and municipal data users can access cadastral
data and assessing information through any computer with an Internet browser and an Internet
connection. This solves the problem of choosing a 3rd party GIS application environment
(i.e. ESRI, MapInfo, etc.) and reduces licensing and maintenance costs for multiple users.
Cadastral Data Development
The development of accurate topologic property maps is the basis for most
municipal and local GIS. DDG is extremely experienced in the conversion
of hardcopy “tax maps” into seamless digital polygon vector geography
coverage’s, accurately identified and connected to Assessing and
other attribute data files. Our trained GIS technicians manually perform
data development, using a proprietary GIS development application to generate
the most accurate and consistent data products.
Geocoding and Address Mapping
DDG also offers other spatial data development services. Geocoding address
listings are common services that we provide to our clients. Geocoding is the creation
of georeferencing data elements that allow a dataset to be mapped. Most typically
it identifies spatial data as a point on the referencing GIS base. The point data
is spatially represented by x and y coordinates. Geocoding can be performed at various
levels of precision ranging from large geographic boundaries (i.e. cities or towns) to
individual properties (i.e. buildings or parcels). Address geocoding typically represents
spatial data as points depicted along a street line segment. DDG offers geocoding services
at all levels of precision.
Image Georeferenceing and other Spatial Digitization Services
DDG offers additional technical service to GIS users and professionals. We can register
(georeference) your orthographic photo images or hard copy scanned maps to an Earth based
GIS coordinate system. We also offer digitization services converting raster graphics (image)
data to identifiable vector based spatial data elements. A typical example of this service
includes the conversion and creation of a municipal zoning GIS.
